Brazil started their Copa America campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on Monday, while James Rodriguez led Colombia to a 2-1 victory over Paraguay.
Despite dominating possession and territory in the Group D match at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Brazil had difficulty scoring against a determined Costa Rica side. Brazil, aiming for their 10th Copa America title, will need to improve in their upcoming matches.
The Brazilian team believed they had secured the lead in the 30th minute when Marquinhos scored at the back post after a flick from Rodrygo, following a free-kick taken by Raphinha.
However, Brazil's goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR review due to a slight offside decision, allowing Costa Rica to avoid conceding. From then on, Brazil struggled to penetrate Costa Rica's defense, managing only three shots on target despite dominating possession with 73.5 percent.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, adopted a defensive approach, sitting back with numbers and rarely pushing forward aggressively.
The Costa Ricans did not manage to get a single shot on goal throughout the entire game.
Brazil coach Dorival Junior praised Costa Rica's strong defensive organization.
"They were very well structured from the beginning to the end," he said. "They showed dedication in all aspects of their play."
Colombia ended the day at the top of Group D with a well-deserved victory over Paraguay at Houston's NRG Stadium, earning all three points.
